We learned some good tips in the driving school today and had lots of time in the car to get a feel of how she runs. The driving school was in a town called Flatrock that overlooked this rock-lined bay. The weather was great - mid 70s - but that will change for tomorrow after a storm rolls through with showers tomorrow. The weather is quite unpredictable and they say you'vecan have every type of weather in one day.
The driving instructors were informative and it was nice to learn the intricacies of this race. When we race in Mexico we have to keep an eye out for goats, horses, cattle, donkeys and buzzards. In Newfoundland it's moose. Haven't seen any yet but they say they can be as big as horse and have very long legs that are unfriendly to windshields. Moose hunting season happens to open this weekend.
They also place heavy emphasis on keeping the spectators at a safe distance from the cars during the race. They are very serious about safety (which is good). A crew goes through before each section to direct fans out of the corners and in safe spots. We will race through villages and neighborhoods and it is important to respect the communities.
In the news: a baby beluga whale is hanging out in Grates Cove, on a peninsula to the north of St. John's. Warnings are in the news to not go swim with it (people are) so it doesn't get too friendly with humans.
Tomorrow is tech for the cars, we have a first aid course, and end the day with a car show for the locals. I'll take more photos tomorrow!
Newfoundland Fun Fact: Ice burg ice doesn't melt as quickly as normal ice cubes. Dad has a bar concept for Arizona: Come cool off in The Igloo! Where the ice cubes don't melt.
